Personality
Balthier is a man of wit, charm and intelligence. He considers himself something of a Robin Hood figure. If this is indeed the case, he's probably closer to Cary Elwes' Robin of Loxley as opposed to Kevin Costner. Classy arrogance with really tight pants and a British accent as opposed to crass and smug arrogance with really tight pants and an out-of-place American accent.
In any case, the point stands, Balthier is what is often referred to as an honest thief. Unless you're a figure of authority, in which he will happily lie through his perfect teeth, probably for his own amusement, and then steal some notable treasure or two or fifty. Still, having been brought up in the ridiculously chivalrous Archadia, Balthier does adhere to a code of honour, even if he mostly makes the code up as he goes along.
Balthier lives for adventure, and he's a peculiarly passionate and oddly idealist individual (lol alliteration)when it comes to flying and freedom, despite his otherwise pragmatic and frankly cynical outlook to the rest of the world.
He also sets a great deal in store by personal hygiene.
History
Balthier was the third son born to the prestigious Cidolphus Bunansa. His birth name was Ffamran Mid Bunansa (The dog's name was Balthier) and he was raised in a lifestyle of prosperity and privilege. Like his father, Balthier was notably brilliant, and was the 'favourite' son. He excelled in engineering and the sciences. His studies ended when he was sixteen however, and appointed a Judge by his father. Unable to carry the burden of dishing out justice, Balthier stole a scrapped clunker of an airship, and took off to the skies. He later met Fran and with her help along with several moogles, he began work on modifying the airship, which soon became unrecognizable from its original state. Upon completion (well, essential completion. Whenever Balthier isn't up to No Good, he can probably be found tinkering with the ship, fine tuning, etc.) the ship was christened the Strahl, and became the envy of sky pirates worldwide.
Later he met a kid called Vaan who made an attempt at upstaging Captain Ego Tightpants, and got thrown off a building and the ever loving shit scared out of him for his impertinence. Further attempts at upstaging were attempted, but Balthier proceeded to stick himself and his lovely partner in the spotlight, subtly informing the audience that they were, indeed, the main characters, despite Vaan being the center figure on the box of the game. After their encounter with Vaan and some prime retail going up in smoke, they encountered the Princess Ashe, and shortly after her, Basch Von Ronsenburg and his mother's potholder. They then rescued Vaan's best friend for life Penelo from Balthier's arch nemesis (Honestly, if Baanga could have mustaches, this one would have a big, black curly one and he'd twirl it), and the party proceeded to have many adventures, full of political intrigue, hilarious hijinks, and Balthier developing a phobia of potholders.
Skills
An engineer, a mechanic, and a draftsman when he's not adventuring, pirating or getting caught up in fate, Balthier can sometimes act like a walking textbook (a bad habit he picked up from his father). He's quite talented with ranged weaponry, although for the most part he does make an effort to avoid conflict (if only because he'd hate to get his clothes dirty).
Balthier also is a rather good shower-or-bar-vocalist, although his musical repertoire only seems to include raunchy Archadian folk songs or drinking tunes. This is sort of the upper class Archadian equivalent to a Californian suburban teen attempting to start a punk rock band.
